Mane: a reference to hair
Monday: the second day of a hair professional’s weekend

Even on a stylist’s day off, she – that would be me – is still thinking about your hair! Welcome to my Mane-ly Monday, a time and space for collective observations and opinions on all things hair: the trends, techniques, treatments, tools, environment and more. As I reflect and recharge, I’d like to take a moment to brag about the Karline’s Salon product of the month, Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil. Even if you cannot pronounce the awesome word, Awapuhi, you’ll love what it will do for your hair.

The formula of the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil, an Allure Magazine Best of Beauty Award Winner, includes Awapuhi extract and lightweight silicones to seal, smooth and add shine to the hair. If your hair is thirsty and frizzy, this light styling oil will leave your strands soft, silky and shiny. You need to apply just a small amount to damp or dry hair to style, tame and add shine. It’s paraben free, gluten free, vegan and color safe.

Awapuhi (Zingiber zerumbet) is also known as bitter ginger, shampoo ginger, wild ginger and pinecone ginger. It is a perennial plant found in many tropical countries. You will find Awapuhi used in herbal remedies for ailments such as indigestion, toothaches and sprains. You can even drink the flower gel to quench thirst. But, Awapuhi is also commonly used in hair shampoos and conditioners to soften and shine. I must try its other uses as described in this Wikipedia entry:

Hawaiian women often pick or cut the flowerheads of this plant in the forest, as they approach a pool or waterfall for a refreshing summer bath, leave the flowers atop a nearby rock, and then squeeze the sweet juices into their hair and over their bodies when the swim is completed. The sudsy juice is excellent for massage, also.

Paul Mitchell has deep roots with Awapuhi, a plant that is native to Hawaii, where, more than 25 years ago, the company’s founders purchased 30-acres to grow the wild ginger plant. The John Paul Mitchell Systems Awapuhi Farm also operates as a nature retreat with organic gardens, fruit trees, and nature trails; a place, they say, to enjoy the simple life, where you can reconnect with all aspects of sustainable living. Perhaps I’ll get there someday, but until I do, I’ll share the essence of this wonderful plant in the care of your hair.
