FORMULA 18: Healthy Hair on the Fast Track

Posted on by webmaster in Hair Solutions Comments Off on FORMULA 18: Healthy Hair on the Fast Track

What if there was a treatment that offered long-term protection, strengthened the hair fiber and created a smoother appearance? There is, and it’s FORMULA 18, F18 for short, developed by Enjoy Hair Care. We at Karline’s Salon like to think of this plant-based reinforcement treatment as healthy hair on the fast track. Here’s why:

Enjoy Hair Care describes FORMULA 18 as:

A chemically resilient material that ionically binds to the hair’s cuticle and offers long-term protection from harsh hair color, free radicals, peroxides, and environmental stressors.  Damaged hair has a raised cuticle, while healthy hair has a smooth, closed cuticle.  FORMULA 18 penetrates between uplifted scales in the cuticle to create a stapling effect with a smoother, healthier appearance.  FORMULA 18 is a blend …to aid in reducing and fixing damage done to the cuticle while simultaneously strengthening the hair fiber.

So what does this mean for you?  FORMULA 18:

  • Instantly repairs hair
  • Mends split ends
  • Locks in Moisture
  • Enhances strength and
    durability
  • Maintains your hair integrity
  • Gives long-lasting protection
  • Leaves the hair feeling softer and smoother

Mane-ly on Monday: No Harm – No Foul

ManelyMonday-665x260Mane: a reference to hair
Monday: the second day of a hair professional’s weekend

Even on a stylist’s day off, she – that would be me – is still thinking about your hair! Welcome to my Mane-ly Monday, a time and space for collective observations and opinions on all things hair: the trends, techniques, treatments, tools, environment and more. As I reflect and recharge, I wanted to share a few of my favorite posts on the Karline’s Salon social network streams. I’ll call this list, No Harm – No Foul, for the articles that link to the posts range on topics from harmful hair product ingredients to how to tell others to keep their hands out of your perfectly coiffed style.

Why this post makes the cut: The ingredients in hair care products matter. Sulfates and parabens can do more harm than good for healthy hair.  Don’t be fooled by the claims of full lather, sweet smells and long-lasting. Always consult with your hair care professional or #AskKarlinesSalon for products that are right for your hair texture and type.

Why this post makes the cut: We all know the benefits of milk for healthy bones, but it can also help with healthy hair growth. The article linked to this post provides a couple of ways to use milk in your hair maintenance routines.

What if Wednesday: Smoothing Treatment Alternatives #AskKarlinesSalon #WisdomWednesday http://ow.ly/YbLXD

Posted by Karline's Salon on Wednesday, February 17, 2016

Why this post makes the cut: To be quite frank, duh, we wrote it. Subtle plugs aside, there are alternatives to relaxers and thermal reconditioning to tame your curls, control frizz and make your hair more manageable without using chemicals that change the structure of your hair or having to wait months to grow out the application.

Why this post makes the cut: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in men and women, and more than 40 percent of African Americans have high blood pressure, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke. We encourage clients, staff and friends to learn more about heart disease. We can take good care of your hair but you must take good care of you.

Why this post makes the cut: We just love this comeback when someone tries it:

This hair is the work of blood, sweat, and tears, and a whole lot of money. Let’s not ruin it with your hands, okay?

Mane-ly on Monday: Satin Secrets

Mane: a reference to hair
Monday: the second day of a hair professional’s weekend

Even on a stylist’s day off, she – that would be me – is still thinking about your hair! Welcome to my Mane-ly Monday, a time and space for collective observations and opinions on all things hair: the trends, techniques, treatments, tools, environment and more. As I reflect and recharge, I am excited about the launch of the KS Hair Care Shop, which features our exclusive line of satin accessories to protect your hair and maintain your style!

Satin is one of the best-kept secrets of at-home hair care for all types and textures. It is an investment you will not regret. Unlike other fabrics, such as cotton and wool, satin maintains the hair’s natural moisture, prevents breakage and reduces frizz. It is a smooth fabric that does not pull or tangle the strands of the hair. We recommend using a satin accessory when you sleep, rest, relax or workout. You can even use our Satin StyleGuard underneath a shower cap, cherished wool hat or Easter bonnet.

So toss the uncomfortable rollers, pins and harmful bandanas. Wrap your hair in our Satin StyleGuard or lay your head on a KS Satin Pillowcase for healthy and happy hair.

Have a great week!!

As I reflect and recharge, I’d like to take a moment to brag about the Karline’s Salon product of the month, Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil. Even if you cannot pronounce the awesome word, Awapuhi, you’ll love what it will do for your hair.

The Karline's Salon product of the month: Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil

The Karline’s Salon product of the month: Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil

Awapuhi (Zingiber zerumbet) is also known as bitter ginger, shampoo ginger, wild ginger and pinecone ginger. It is a perennial plant found in many tropical countries. You will find Awapuhi used in herbal remedies for ailments such as indigestion, toothaches and sprains. You can even drink the flower gel to quench thirst. But, Awapuhi is also commonly used in hair shampoos and conditioners to soften and shine. I must try its other uses as described in this Wikipedia entry:

Hawaiian women often pick or cut the flowerheads of this plant in the forest, as they approach a pool or waterfall for a refreshing summer bath, leave the flowers atop a nearby rock, and then squeeze the sweet juices into their hair and over their bodies when the swim is completed. The sudsy juice is excellent for massage, also.

Paul Mitchell has deep roots with Awapuhi, a plant that is native to Hawaii, where, more than 25 years ago, the company’s founders purchased 30-acres to grow the wild ginger plant. The John Paul Mitchell Systems Awapuhi Farm also operates as a nature retreat with organic gardens, fruit trees, and nature trails; a place, they say, to enjoy the simple life, where you can reconnect with all aspects of sustainable living. Perhaps I’ll get there someday, but until I do, I’ll share the essence of this wonderful plant in the care of your hair.

What if I Relax My Edges Every Other Week

Posted on by webmaster in Hair Solutions Comments Off on What if I Relax My Edges Every Other Week

KS-WIW-new

Stop. Stop right now and here’s why. You can cause severe damage including hair loss and thinning. Moreover, it will take quite a bit of time to repair the damage done. Here are a few more reasons, courtesy of Design Essentials (full disclosure: Karline’s Salon uses Design Essential professional products and is a local retailer).

The temple areas should not be relaxed every two weeks. Normally the density of the hair is lower around the edges, and it is almost impossible to prevent over processing if the hair is relaxed every two weeks. Professional stylists can give you the appearance of a relaxer by using special techniques, styling tools and professional products.

Karline Ricketts, Master Stylist and Educator

One of the leading confessions I hear from new clients is that they relax their edges in between touch-ups. To prevent breakage, thinning and balding, remember that your edges are fragile follicles, so avoid over-processing and excessive heat. In addition, if you’re under stress, grab a squeeze ball instead of pulling on the edges of your hair. To smooth out-of-control or dry edges without chemical processing, I recommend Design Essentials’ Sleek Edge Control, which comes in three different strengths: maximum hold, medium and firm. Regardless of your texture, it tames the edges and works for both natural and relaxed hair.
