Mane: a reference to hair
Monday: the second day of a hair professional’s weekend

Even on a stylist’s day off, she – that would be me – is still thinking about your hair! Welcome to my Mane-ly Monday, a time and space for collective observations and opinions on all things hair:  trends, techniques, treatments, tools, environment, and more. As I reflect and recharge, I must confess that I am one hand in and one hand out of Beyonce’s latest release, Lemonade – all because of the lyric, “Better call Becky with the good hair.”  I’m not stirring controversy. In fact, I consider myself to be a member of the Beyhive and love Beyonce’s artistry, fierceness, and fabulousness. Further, I am in total awe of how she surrounds herself with courageous and amazing women and girls, including Sabrina Fulton and Leslie McSpadden (mothers of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, respectively), Serena Williams, Quvenzhané Wallis, Zendaya, Winnie Harlow, Amandla Stenberg, and more.  That said, we must stop, I repeat STOP, perpetuating hair stereotypes.  It’s divisive and harmful.  Good hair is healthy hair, no matter the type or texture.  Now, let’s change up the lyrics and sing “Better call Karline’s for the healthy hair!

Here are a couple of perspectives on the notion of good hair.

I encourage you to start a conversation, particularly with our children.  Empower them to be bold and confident.  Teach them self-esteem and to embrace their unique beauty, inside and out.  And when it comes to our hair, we all need to free our minds, so that the rest will follow.  Sorry Bey, but this is the tune I’m humming today.

Join our chorus, make an appointment to visit Karline’s Salon, your West Palm Beach sanctuary for healthy and happy hair.

Have a great week!!

PS:  For more “tea” on Lemonade, I highly recommend the article, Beyoncé’s Lemonade and the Undeniable Power of a Black Woman’s Vulnerability, featured on vulture.com.

Welcome to my Mane-ly Monday, a time and space for collective observations and opinions on all things hair: the trends, techniques, treatments, tools, environment and more. As I reflect and recharge, I want to say publicly, Thank U Prince!   Like many of you, the untimely transition of this musical genius hit me like a ton of bricks.  His music could have been the soundtrack for so many of our lives, and his influence on the hair and fashion industries gave me inspiration. He even made what would become the KS Satin StyleGuard look sexy.  For as much as Prince changed his hair, it was always a reminder of the freedom we enjoy to express ourselves.

Smoothing Treatment Alternatives

What if Wednesday: Smoothing Treatment Alternatives

What if you want a smoothing treatment to tame your curls, control frizz and make your hair more manageable, but want to avoid using chemicals that change the structure of your hair or having to wait months to grow out the application? Trust a professional hair stylist to help with that!   There are alternatives to relaxers and thermal reconditioning (also known as Japanese straightening). And we’re not talking about Brazilian straightening or Keratin therapies, which contain varying amounts of formaldehyde, a toxic ingredient that is known to cause cancer and poses a risk to everyone’s health.

At Karline’s Salon, we offer two non-toxic smoothing treatment alternatives: the Agave Smoothing Treatment and the Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System. Here’s an overview of both:

The Agave Smoothing Treatment

This treatment is formulated instead with blue agave plant extracts, the sugars from the plant help hydrate hair.

[It ]Instantly & safely smoothes-out up to 100% frizz and volume, and reduces curl retention by 80%. There’s NO FORMALDEHYDE or Formaldehyde derivatives, making it one of the safest salon treatments available.

With an exclusive Amino Acid Complex called Carbo-C, Agave Smoothing gently alters the hair’s disulphide bonds, reforming them to make the hair sleek & smooth. Agave plant sugars help hydrate & condition.

Hair coloring can be done the same day, but only after an Agave Smoothing Treatment. What’s more, Agave Smoothing Treatment can be used over previously chemically straightened hair such as Keratin Treatments, Thio based straighteners and Sodium Hydroxide Relaxers.

Here’s a short video that describes what makes Agave so exceptional.

The Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System (STS)

The Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System is a safe and effective amino-acid infused thermal reconditioning systems.

The Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System strengthens the hair while straightening, stretching and smoothing naturally curly, frizzy, multi-textured, transitioning and chemically treated hair.

The Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System is an Amino-Acid based system, using the active Cysteine Amino Acid.  It does not contain Formaldehyde nor any Formaldehyde derivatives. It does not emit harmful gasses as seen with Formaldehyde based straightening systems.

The Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System is not a chemical. It is a protein based treatment that does not contain any harsh or permanent chemicals. Unlike chemical based products, the Strengthening Therapy System does not break nor rearrange the bonds. In contrast, it fills the hair fiber with micro-fine amino acids, resulting in the stretching or elongation of the hair strand, while providing maximum strengthening to the hair.

The Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System utilizes the Thermal Reconditioning Process to elongate, straighten, strengthen and transform hair into a stronger, healthier, more manageable state that lasts up to 12 weeks.

Read more at DesignEssentials.com.

Here’s a short video that describes why we like this system, especially for clients transitioning to natural hair.

When you are “hair ready” for a smoothing treatment, ask your Karline’s Salon stylist about the K-Natural package, which includes two visits, the Design Essentials Strengthening Therapy System application, and products for at-home maintenance – all for a special price. Make an appointment to visit Karline’s Salon, your West Palm Beach sanctuary for healthy hair.

What if You Want a Silk Press?

Posted on by webmaster in Hair Solutions, Hair Styles 2 Comments

KS-WIW-new

What if you want a silk press? Trust a professional hair stylist to help with that! A silk press is a delicious style for natural hair that requires a lot of love and, a minimum of 6 inches in length. Long gone are the days of the press and curl, the silk press is a process of blow drying the hair after shampooing and conditioning, and then using a ceramic iron to smooth out the curl and give the hair a silky texture.

The silk press, if properly maintained, can last up to two weeks. A protein treatment and trim will prolong the style. If you’ve been wearing braids for a while, we recommend a strengthening therapy, a protein based treatment for weakened or damaged hair.

Your silk press at-home care should include NO HEAT, but instead, daily use of a light oil or serum to smooth and maintain the hair’s shine. Two products we highly recommend are the Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil or Silkology Silkit Hi-Gloss Serum, both available at Karline’s Salon. At night, pull out your KS Satin gear: the KS SatinStyleGuard (wrap cap) and the KS Satin pillowcase. During exercise and workouts, apply your oil or serum and wear the satin cap. And don’t forget to schedule your salon appointment every two weeks.

Here’s more on the silk press:

What if I Relax My Edges Every Other Week

Posted on by webmaster in Hair Solutions Comments Off on What if I Relax My Edges Every Other Week

KS-WIW-new

Stop. Stop right now and here’s why. You can cause severe damage including hair loss and thinning. Moreover, it will take quite a bit of time to repair the damage done. Here are a few more reasons, courtesy of Design Essentials (full disclosure: Karline’s Salon uses Design Essential professional products and is a local retailer).

The temple areas should not be relaxed every two weeks. Normally the density of the hair is lower around the edges, and it is almost impossible to prevent over processing if the hair is relaxed every two weeks. Professional stylists can give you the appearance of a relaxer by using special techniques, styling tools and professional products.

Karline Ricketts, Master Stylist and Educator

One of the leading confessions I hear from new clients is that they relax their edges in between touch-ups. To prevent breakage, thinning and balding, remember that your edges are fragile follicles, so avoid over-processing and excessive heat. In addition, if you’re under stress, grab a squeeze ball instead of pulling on the edges of your hair. To smooth out-of-control or dry edges without chemical processing, I recommend Design Essentials’ Sleek Edge Control, which comes in three different strengths: maximum hold, medium and firm. Regardless of your texture, it tames the edges and works for both natural and relaxed hair.
