This month, we shine the spotlight on Michaela angela Davis, writer, cultural commentator, image activist, and the world’s foremost advocate for all things curly, coily, and kinky (source: Naturally Curly). For many years, we have connected, liked, and shared episodes of her amazing series, Hair Tales, but time has come to celebrate and applaud this phenomenal woman as our Diva of the Month. This post includes a few reasons why you should too.
Michaela angela Davis is the creator of MAD FREE, a service and platform for producing creative content, curating culture and connecting community. She’s been honored by the NAACP, UNCF, The City of NY, and others, for her work expanding the narrow and often inaccurate narratives of women of color in mainstream media. She was the only Executive Fashion, Beauty & Culture Editor at Essence, the first Fashion Director at Vibe and the last Editor-in-Chief at Honey magazines. She has written widely about gender, race, fashion, culture, beauty & identity. [Source:MAD FREE]
We have mad respect for Michaela angela Davis and are inspired by her bold and wise words:
How I grew to believe Black hair has power, genius, and magic in it, defying gravity and limitation. I mean, look at how marvelous it is: Black hair grows up and out.
I practice radical self-care because I want radical change.
Read, watch, listen, and share the content below and salute her-story: Michaela angela Davis.
If you have ever been in the presence of greatness, you know what it feels like to be in genuine awe. Like the I-think-they-can-see-that-I’ve-stopped-breathing kind of awe. The she-just-hit-the-world-with-a-Grand-Slam kind of awe. The I-just-listened-to-Lemonade-and-life-has-been-given kind of awe. That kind of awe happens to almost everyone that listens to Cultural Critic and Image Activist Michaela angela Davis speak, especially at live events.
A few years ago, I was introduced to a woman with these simple sentences: “T, this is Michaela. I feel like you should know each other. You might get along.” Judging purely by the golden halo of an afro she sported, in tandem with some of the brightest kicks I had ever seen, I couldn’t help but smile and agree.
